CCSK is the Certificate of Cloud Security Knowledge, issued by the Cloud Security Alliance. It’s vendor neutral. It doesn’t assume you work in AWS, Azure or Google Cloud.
The current version is v5, and it’s open book. Both facts change how you should approach it.
What Is CCSK?
CCSK tests knowledge of the CSA Security Guidance and the Cloud Controls Matrix. It’s a certificate rather than a certification. That means there’s no experience requirement, no continuing education and no annual maintenance fee. You pass it and you hold it.
That structure makes it cheap to maintain and slightly less weighty than CCSP, which requires five years of experience and ongoing CPE. The two are often compared, but they don’t really compete. CCSK tests knowledge of cloud security principles. CCSP is a professional certification with an experience gate.
What Does the Exam Cover?
Twelve domains in v5:
Cloud Computing Concepts and Architectures. Cloud Governance. Risk, Audit and Compliance. Organization Management. Identity and Access Management. Security Monitoring. Infrastructure and Networking. Cloud Workload Security. Data Security. Application Security. Incident Response and Resilience. Related Technologies and Strategies.
The v5 update pushed the material toward artificial intelligence, Zero Trust strategy, DevSecOps and cloud workload security. If you’re working from v4 material, those are the areas where it’ll let you down.
Most candidates find Identity and Access Management and Data Security the hardest. The CSA guidance takes its own position on shared responsibility. It differs from how any single provider describes it.
Open Book Is Not the Advantage It Sounds Like
The exam is open book and taken online. That sounds generous until you do the math. Sixty questions in 120 minutes is two minutes per question. And the CSA Security Guidance runs to hundreds of pages.
Looking up an answer you don’t know costs several minutes. Looking up one you half know costs one. Candidates who fail usually planned to search their way through instead of preparing. Then they run out of time somewhere in the forties.
The passing score is 80%, which is high. You can miss twelve questions out of sixty. Treat the open book as a safety net for the few questions you can’t recall. It isn’t a study strategy.
Who Should Take CCSK?
CCSK suits three groups. The first is security professionals who work across more than one cloud provider. The second is GRC and audit people who need cloud fluency without a platform specialty. The third is anyone whose employer runs several clouds, where a single-provider cert only covers part of the picture.
It’s a reasonable stepping stone to CCSP, since the domains overlap and CCSK has no experience requirement blocking you. Passing CCSK first is a low cost way to find out whether the CCSP material suits you.
It’s the wrong choice if you work exclusively in one cloud. AWS Security Specialty or the Microsoft security exams go deeper into the platform you actually use. When you’re hired for one environment, depth matters more than breadth.
Exam Details
- Current Version: CCSK v5
- Number of Questions: 60, selected randomly from a pool
- Question Types: Multiple choice
- Time Limit: 120 minutes
- Passing Score: 80%
- Format: Open book, taken online
- Cost: $445 USD, including two attempts valid for two years
- Experience Required: None
The included second attempt is a real saving. Most certifications charge full price for a retake, so the effective cost of failing once is far lower here than it looks.
How to Prepare
Read the CSA Security Guidance v5 properly, then build an index. Knowing which domain covers a topic is what makes the open book usable. An index you wrote yourself is faster to search than one you downloaded.
Study the Cloud Controls Matrix alongside it. Questions draw on both documents, and the CCM is the part candidates skip.
Time a practice run at two minutes per question before you sit it. That one exercise tells you whether your lookup strategy works. Better to learn that in practice than at question 45 of the real thing.
What Comes After CCSK?
CCSP is the usual next step. The domains overlap enough that your CCSK study carries over. CSA also offers CCZT, a zero trust certificate, for anyone whose organization runs a zero trust program.
If your work is drifting toward one platform, a provider-specific certification adds the depth CCSK deliberately avoids. AWS Security Specialty is the obvious pairing on the AWS side.
